Sonorité nipponne : découvrez le shamisen - MTL Shamisen Project

There is currently no program scheduled for this show yet.

You probably know about ramen, Samurais and anime, but what do you know about traditional Japanese music culture?

The shamisen is a three-stringed, fretless Japanese instrument. Its sound is often compared to that of the banjo, but a vibration reminiscent of the sitar and shamisen players’ particular instrumental techniques give it a uniquely and typically Japanese sound.

Jacinthe

Musician and cultural entrepreneur Jacinthe is the founder of the MTL Shamisen Project. After studying classical guitar, she majored in East Asian Studies at the Université de Montréal. That program gave her the opportunity to study for a year in Osaka, Japan. A few years after her time at Kansai Gaidai University, while back in Japan, she became interested in the shamisen and developed a very special relationship with the instrument. In order to continue her learning, she met several masters and professional musicians in Japan as well as in California, Germany and Hawaii.

In 2016, thanks to the support of the Japanese-Canadian Cultural Centre of Montreal, she offered the first local workshops exploring this unique instrument. Since then, she has regularly participated in various events and projects related to Japanese culture and collaborates with groups and artists such as Arashi Daiko and Komachi Montreal.
